Bitzy Beauty Tips: Skincare Routine

on

Hello again, Fellowers! I don’t know about you, but I’m obsessed with beauty products. For me, it’s the biggest source of calming, centering time. I love taking care of my skin and hair, and I love the ritual of makeup. I spent an absurd amount of what little freetime I have watching YouTube videos, reading blogs, and exploring Facebook and Instagram for beauty-related tips and product reviews.

I recently moved from Indiana to South Carolina, and the changes in climate and lifestyle (way more outdoors time!) have wreaked havoc on my skin. Because of that, I’ve invested more in my skincare in the past several months than I have in my entire life. I’ve always taken care of my skin, but I’ve recently started paying super close attention to using active ingredients, like BHA, AHA, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acids, etc., to address specific skin concerns. My concerns include large pores, redness and fine lines. Here’s the regimen I’ve put together to address those concerns:

AM Routine

Before I get started with explaining my morning routine, let me preface this by saying, I’m not a morning person… like, at all. I am usually out the door in 45 minutes, with a full face of makeup and hair. This may look like a lot of steps, but they go very quickly, so don’t be intimidated.

Cleanser: Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser
Toner: Thayers Witch Hazel in Rose Petal
Calming Spray: Mario Badescu Facial Spray in Aloe, Cucumber and Green Tea
Essence: Lancome Energie de Vie Smooth & Glow Boosting Liquid Care
Moisturizer: Paula’s Choice Redness Relief – 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant
Eye Cream: Dr. Brandt Do Not Age (DNA) Eye Cream
Suncreen: Urban Decay’s Urban Defense Complexion Primer with SPF30

On the weekends, I usually skip the essence step, and I’ll trade in CeraVe’s AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 in place of the separate moisturizer and sunscreen steps. I don’t wear a ton of makeup on the weekends (if any), so I generally don’t worry about how well my skincare plays with my makeup.

PM Routine

When I get home from work, I try to find time to hop on the elliptical or do some yoga. When the weather is warm, I take my kids to the community pool. So when I’m changing into my gym clothes or swimsuit, I usually remove my makeup with the help of the Face Halo. These little miracles are by far my favorite purchase of 2017, introduced to me by one of my favorite YouTubers, Chloe Morello. They just require a little water, and they remove every inch of makeup from face with no chemicals or scrubbing. Face Halos are also great for removing masks. I HIGHLY recommend investing in these little babies!

Face Halo

Before I go to bed, I double cleanse my face. If you’re not familiar with double cleansing, you’re not alone. Check out my last blog post to learn more about it. So, here’s my nighttime routine:

Oil Cleanser: Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse Balm
Cleanser: Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser
Toner: Pixi Glow Tonic with 5% Glycolic Acid, Aloe Vera & Ginseng
Moisturizer: Korres Wild Rose Advanced Brightening Sleep Facial
Eye Cream: Dr. Brandt’s DNA Eye Cream
Lip Care: I keep a tiny tub of sugar and some coconut oil by my sink that I use as a lip scrub just about every night. I follow that up with a generous coating of Shea Moisture’s 100% Raw Shea Butter. My lips have never loved me more.

I apply my moisturizer and eye cream with brushes. I do it for a couple of reasons: I think I use less product when I apply with synthetic brushes, and it’s gentler on my skin than using my hands.

To spot treat whiteheads, I use Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion before bed. Pro tips about this product? Do not shake it. It looks like it wants to shaken. It feels so wrong not to shake it. But don’t do it. Also, it’s supposed to applied after your moisturizer. Dab it on, and don’t rub it in.

PM Routine

I’m going to be be super duper honest with you and admit that I don’t always have energy for the full PM routine. When that’s the case, I turn to Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Cleanser & Waterproof Makeup Remover. I swipe that all of my face with a cotton round, follow it up with a little toner and moisturizer, and call it good.

And finally, twice a week I use Peter Thomas Roth’s Pumpkin Enzyme Mask to give a little extra love to my pores. I also use Peter Thomas Roth’s 24K Gold Mask Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Mask twice a week to fight aging. And two other days a week, I will use my Clarisonic Mia 2 with a Radiance head, which is gentle enough not to irritate my skin, but still gives some nice exfoliation. I also love to use sheet masks once a week to boost hydration. I absolutely love all the TONYMOLY sheet masks.

Masks

Okay, y’all, I know this looks like a lot. In fact, it is a lot. But I’m learning that as I get older, my skin needs more than it did in my 20s to be fresh and radiant. I’m not someone who is likely to ever use Botox or fillers, so I’m okay with investing in really high quality skincare and taking the time to use it correctly. What are your skincare goals for 2018?
